Pharma industry looking to new ways to help reduce costs - going green
The pharma industry has long sought to reduce costs through increased efficiency and productivity. More and more pharma companies are turning to green chemistry and its 12 principles as a new way to reduce costs as well as the more obvious benefits to the environment. There are even awards to be won for green chemistry.
The pharma industry is not impervious to the economic crisis, and, like all industries, must reduce costs where possible to survive and thrive during the recession. Green chemistry is one strategy the industry can turn to, especially as it's one of the worst industries in terms of waste. What's more are the obvious safety and environmental savings which come with green chemistry programmes.
Several of the leading pharma companies are implementing green initiatives. One of the first companies to introduce a green programme to their organisation was Pfizer who are firmly committed to green chemistry. Hear from Peter Dunn, Global Green Chemistry Lead, Pfizer at this year's World Drug Manufacturing Summit to learn more about Pfizer's green chemistry programme, including:
- Implementation of strategies to influence medicinal and research chemists to make greener solvent and reagent selection
- Use of biocatalysis to substantially reduce waste and energy use in the manufacturing processes for pregabalin
- Achieving significant environmental and financial savings
And more......
Other issues dealt with at this event include: Cost of good reduction strategies, operational excellence, anti counterfeiting and overcoming regulatory challenges.
