The Supply Chain Risk Management Summit 2008 took place on the 3rd and 4th of November and the World Trade Centre in Rotterdam provided a fitting backdrop to what can only be described as an exceptional event.

Ian Taylor, Editor of Cargo Security International, did an exemplary job as chairman for the event leading our packed programme and providing another perspective to many of the presentations with his wealth of knowledge.

Day one of the summit saw presentations from John Fontanella, VP, Research, AMR Research USA,  Didier Odorico, Director of Risk Management, Tetra Pak Switzerland, Patrick Scholler, Procurement Director, HP USA and Douglas Kent, Member of the European Leadership Team, Supply Chain Council UK, who presented to a packed house! His unmissable presentation - Where finance meets supply chain: Optimising the financial supply chain - discussed the very real relationship between the supply chain and finance and the importance of adaptability to survival. He went on to disclose a new definition of risk and in turn a new way of defining and recognising risk within the supply chain.

Pre-arranged meetings were once again a huge success, with many sponsors walking away with the very real possibility of new business in the coming months. So much so in fact that one exhibitor made it onto the ‘preferred suppliers' list of one of our delegates whilst at the event!

Day one wrapped up with an informal drinks reception which gave attendees the chance to relax and network whilst enjoying some Dutch beer and Croquettes. What better way to end a successful day?

Day two kicked off with Tonet Rivera's exceptional presentation concerning manufacturing in China. Tonet's wealth of experience has led to the understanding that there remains massive opportunity in China but understanding the culture and speaking the language are crucial for managing risk. That and in business, don't use your own money use your Father-in-Law's!

Other highlights on day two included Marsh's interactive workshop, John O' Connor, Director, Supply Chain Risk Management, Cisco Systems USA and Stefan Bauhofer, Global Risk Manager, Production, Schindler Group Switzerland.

Jim Burtles, Business Continuity Expert and Author, UK, who is widely regarded as the creator of BCP closed the event and told the audience that he thought that he knew about supply chain risk management but the two days he spent at SCRM 2008 had really opened his eyes and taught him an awful lot. Praise indeed!

"Congratulations, some excellent, practical, valuable presentations!"

Stefan Banhofer, Global Risk Manager Global Production
